Measles is a highly contagious illness that is common worldwide. It is caused by a virus and is spread through coughing and sneezing. A person is most contagious about four days before the onset of the measles rash; symptoms that may occur several days before the rash begins include muscle and body aches, runny nose, and high fever. Although the measles virus cannot be killed, treatments are available to relieve symptoms as the body fights the virus.
