Measles is a highly contagious disease that is caused by a virus. The virus only infects humans, and is commonly spread through coughing and sneezing. Common symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, muscle aches, and, of course, the characteristic rash for which the disease is known. Because there is nothing that can kill the measles virus, treatment focuses on supportive care -- treating the symptoms that result from the illness while the body fights the infection.
